Plant people of Australia

Note on commemorative plant names

Botanists commemorate colleagues and others by naming plants after them. For example, the genus Banksia (it is conventional to present scientific names in italics) was first named in a German publication in October 1782 to commemorate the great patron of natural science Sir Joseph Banks. The person who created (published) the name is called the ‘author’ and in this case it was Carl Linnaeus, son (fils) of the great founder of modern botanical nomenclature. In botanical works the author is also commemorated as a standard abbreviation of their own name added to the name they have created – in this case Banksia L.f. Species names are presented botanically as binomials e.g. Banksia baxteri R. Br. In this case baxteri is referred to as the specific epithet within the species name and it commemorates William Baxter, one of Banks’s many collectors in New Holland, who found a specimen (type) of this species near King George Sound, WA, in 1829 which assisted Robert Brown in producing the first description. Much of the history of Australian botany is locked up in these commemorative botanical names.

In the following list the number of genera commemorating each person is given in roman capitals and the number of species in plain type, the data extracted from the Australian Plant Name Index database.

Biographical and other information can be found at the following sites:

Australian Botanists and Illustrators – compiled by the Council of Heads of Australian Herbaria for the Australian National Herbarium.

Biography – biographical notes on plant collectors and illustrators or others relevant to Australian botany, compiled by the Council of Heads of Australian Herbaria for the Australian National Herbarium.

British Museum database of plant collectors – a world-wide listing of plant collectors compiled at the British Museum.

Plant collectors in Malesia – biographical notes on plant collectors in the region of Malesia (a biogeographical region straddling the boundaries of the Indomalaya ecozone and Australasia ecozone, and also a phytogeographical floristic region in the Paleotropical Kingdom) compiled for the Flora of Malesia project.
